Ness Connection: Meet Mircea Velicescu

Mircea Velicescue

Meet Mircea Velicescu, Vice President  Delivery – Timisoara Center. Mircea brings years of experience in software engineering and team management – two traits that are very valuable as he leads our team in Timisoara, Romania.

Q: Tell us a little bit about your role at Ness and what you do.

A: I am responsible for the development center in Timisoara. Meaning, I’m responsible for oiling the machine so it runs smoothly from all the different perspectives including R&D, HR, IT, Finance, etc. I also am involved in pre-sales and sales activities with potential new customers to either assign one of my team members that would be the most beneficial to them or working with them personally.

Q: How do you take your coffee?

A: I actually am not a big coffee drinker. I find the taste is too bitter for me. I do love the smell of coffee, but I prefer to get my caffeine intake through Coke 0.

Q: What’s on your to-do list?

A: Right now my main focus is on growth. As the world recovers from the pandemic, I am focusing on growing and strengthening our Timisoara center to ensure that we can maintain excellent service for our current customers and acquire new ones at the same time.

Q: How did you get started in the industry?

A:  I started my career as a software engineer doing a lot of coding. Here in Romania, the industry was still young and there were a lot of small start-up tech companies who worked as an extension of a larger company usually based in Europe. I ended up co-founding my own technology start-up and in that role is where I really took on the management side of things by leading a small team. This gave me a lot of experience in both engineering and team management which helped lead me to where I am today with Ness.

Q: How would your 10-year-old self react to what you do now?

A: Having a ten-year-old son, it is easy for me to put myself in his shoes and view my line of work. Especially now during the pandemic, he sees me working from home a lot. He thinks I just sit on calls all day and get a paycheck from it. From the perspective of a ten-year-old, life is easy for adults – there is no going to school or having homework which at his age seems like the most difficult thing that can happen to a person.

Q: What is the most unusual food you have eaten?

A: About ten years ago my wife and I were in southern Italy and we stopped in a little seaside restaurant for lunch. On the main sign was a catch of the day. I can not remember what it was called but we decided to try it not knowing what it was, but feeling adventurous. When they brought us our food, it was some sort of sea creature that looked like a flower and we had to use a special tool to get the little bit of meat that was inside of it out. It had a very unusual taste and I can’t say if I would want to eat it again.

Q: Where is the next place you want to travel to and why?

A: The next place I am excited to go to is the Black Sea here in Romania. The city of Timisoara is located on a plain, so the landscape is very flat, there are no hills, mountains, or lakes. But the Black Sea has a beautiful landscape surrounding it and is not too far from me, so that should be an exciting trip.

Q: What’s the one word you would use to describe Ness and why?

A: When thinking of Ness two words come to mind, diverse and flexible. As I said before we are big on trust, so in a managerial position, we are trusted with the flexibility to do our job in order to help the customers reach success. The diversity aspect plays hand-in-hand with flexibility. It gives us the capabilities to learn and apply different techniques for different scenarios.

Q: What motivates you to work hard?

A: The people I work with are my biggest motivators. I am very fortunate to work with colleagues I can trust which is very important to me. At the end of the day, we all want what is best for the company and our team. I am glad to be part of such an amazing team here in Timisoara. It is a pleasure being able to work with them regardless of the challenges we may come across.
